Wedemarks – where the sandwich cake was born and love arose

Wedemarks patisserie was founded in 1924 and has been at the same address on Prästgatan ever since. It quickly became a local institution — a place where generations have drunk coffee, done crosswords, and celebrated life's big and small moments.

In the 1960s, a little culinary history was made here. The smörgåstårta — a savoury sandwich cake — is said to have been invented at Wedemarks. And as if that weren't enough, the Jamaica cake was also born here: a rum-scented classic that still brings a smile to the faces of locals.

Known affectionately as "Wedan," the café still carries its old charm. The interior feels like the 1950s, and the saying goes that time moves a little slower inside. One story tells of a couple who met in the doorway in 1974 — and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the café's 100th birthday.

Today the menu mixes classics with lunches and homemade gelato, especially popular on the outdoor terrace in summer. But the soul remains the same — everything is baked on site, from scratch.

Wedemarks is more than a café. It is a living piece of the city's history. So next time you walk along Prästgatan — stop in, order a slice of cake, and maybe a spoonful of something special.

FAKTA

Wedemark's patesseri was founded in 1924 by Artur and Ninni Wedemark and has been located on Prästgatan in Östersund ever since. During the 1960s, both the sandwich cake and the Jamaica cake are said to have been launched here. The patisserie has retained its original interior and is a well-known meeting place in the city. Today, the business is run in the same premises with its own bakery and cold drink counter, and offers classic pastries, lunch dishes and homemade Italian ice cream in the summer.
